Edith Katende Mufumbiro is dead. She died in the early hours of the morning, fighting cancer, alone, because the man she married just over two years ago was sitting in a prison cell he should never have entered.

On December 16, 2022, Edith and Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro (NUP deputy spokesperson) were wed at St Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe. They celebrated at Bobi Wine’s One Love Beach in Busabala, surrounded by friends, family, and fellow believers in a free Uganda. Dr Kizza Besigye was there. Erias Lukwago was there. It was a day of love, defiance, and hope.

Dictator Museveni saw that wedding and felt rage. That is the only explanation for what happened next.

Since early September 2025, Waiswa Mufumbiro has been locked in Luzira Upper Prison, without charge. Without crime. Without justice. His only offence: standing with the people of Uganda against a regime that cannot tolerate opposition.

While he sat in that cell, his wife’s cancer progressed. She needed her husband. She needed stability, hope, and care. Instead, she spent her final months lonely, navigating and battling terminal illness while the regime that stole her husband looked on โ€” indifferent, or worse. Thatโ€™s exactly what Museveni wanted.

Power-greedy criminal Museveni wanted her to die prematurely, he ensured she doesnโ€™t get proper medical care, he did everything in his capacity to see that she dies early as a way of punishing NUP and waiswa. Remember when he said;

Ideally Museveni is ensuring that his wife, Janet Kataaha dies with all wives of opposition members.

Despot criminal Museveni has ruled Uganda for over four decades. In that time, he has perfected one instrument of terror above all others: not just jailing the opposition, but destroying everything around them โ€” their livelihoods, their peace of mind, their families, their health, all in broad-daylight.

Edith did not die peacefully. She died in a country where loving the wrong person โ€” a person who dares to speak truth to power โ€” can cost you everything. She died with her husband behind bars for no crime. Museveni may not have held the syringe, but he built the system that killed her.

To the international community watching our country, Uganda: This is what political persecution looks like in practice. It doesn’t always come with bullets, but we have also endured them.

Sometimes it comes quietly โ€” in a hospital room, at 3 in the morning, with an empty chair where a husband should have been sitting.

Free Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. Free all political prisoners in Uganda. And let the world remember the name of Edith Katende Mufumbiro โ€” a woman who deserved far better than the Uganda Museveni built.
