𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐲𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝

It all started with Despot Museveni sleeping with Winnie Byanyima, wife to Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Octogenarian Museveni started harassing Besigye openly, and looking for all possible ways to eliminate him by dragging him in prison cells and and kangaroo courts over crafted cases.

Today, when Besigye appeared frail in court struggling after months of torture in detention, it was more than a troubling image.

It was a portrait of what many believe Uganda’s justice system has become under tyrant Museveni: a tool for torturing political opponents to death rather than protecting the rule of law.

Besigye is no ordinary opposition politician. A physician, retired colonel and Museveni’s bushwar personal doctor. Besigye has spent decades challenging the man who has ruled Uganda since 1986.

Time and again, his reward has been arrest, detention, torture, humiliation and prosecution.

The latest case has become one of the most controversial. He was renditioned from Kenya to Uganda, while Uganda’s own Supreme Court ruled that trying civilians before military courts was unconstitutional.

Yet despite those developments, Besigye has remained behind bars as prosecutors crafted and pursued new charges through the civilian courts and now he has collapsed in court and nearing death in accordance to Despot Museveni’s wishes.

Justice delayed is Justice denied. Behold, justice can not be measured by how quickly the state can file charges but by whether the accused receives a fair hearing, adequate medical care, access to lawyers of their choice, leading to a fair trial guided by the presumption of innocence.

Those principles appear increasingly difficult to recognize in Uganda 🇺🇬 generally and in particularly, in Besigye’s case.

The images of an elderly citizen, a seasoned politician, a senior medical and military figure, a presidential candidate and opposition leader looking physically weakened inside a courtroom and suddenly collapsing should trouble every Ugandan, regardless of political affiliation.

Courts should be places where justice is seen to be delivered, not a place where the condition of a prisoner becomes a story of misery and sorrow.

History will judge not only how long a leader ruled, but how he mistreated those who dared to challenge him.
