We have lost one of our shining Rugby star in the most barbaric, senseless way imaginable. Sydney Gongodyo, the 27-year-old powerful forward for the Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates, a promising engineering student at Makerere University โ a young man full of life, talent, and dreams โ was beaten to death by a bloodthirsty mob in Kampala on June 5.
They accused him of stealing a handbag. CCTV footage has since proven his innocence beyond any doubt. Yet that did not save him. A promising life, cut short in cold blood over a lie. No words can capture the pain. A national rugby player, a future engineer, a father, a brother, a son, a teammate โ reduced to nothing because mob justice now rules the streets under this rotten system.
His club has rightly retired his No. 7 jersey. Matches postponed. The entire rugby fraternity in mourning. Teammates, the Uganda Rugby Union, and leaders like Bobi Wine pouring out tributes. But nothing brings him back.
To the family of Sydney Gongodyo โ his parents, wife&child, siblings, relatives โ we send our deepest, most painful condolences. No parent should bury their child like this. Your son was a warrior on the field and a builder in the classroom. May God grant you strength in this unbearable loss.
To the entire Rugby Cranes family, Stanbic Black Pirates, Makerere University fraternity, and all sports lovers in Uganda โ our hearts are with you. This is not just the death of one player. This is the death of hope for many young talents who still believe in merit, discipline, and chasing excellence in a country that has turned against its own children.
But let us speak the bitter truth without fear. This horror is the direct harvest of Criminal Museveni’s long reign of terror and moral decay. For over 40 years, this senile, power-hungry despot has sown seeds of lawlessness, brutality, and dehumanization across Uganda. He has turned citizens into animals โ quick to lynch, slow to reason โ because justice is dead, police are compromised, and the entire system breeds cruelty instead of order.
A national rugby star can be murdered on mere accusation, even when cameras scream his innocence, and the regime pretends to “arrest three suspects” (Noordin Ssebagala, Roden Ayebazibwe, and Juliet Namukose) while attending vigils and donating measly shillings for funerals. This is theatre. The real criminal is the system that created this jungle where mob justice replaces the rule of law.
Museveni’s junta has normalized blood on the streets. It has harvested a generation soaked in hopelessness, poverty, and rage. How many more talented sons and daughters must die before Ugandans wake up? Sydney Gongodyo is gone. But the regime that enabled his killers remains. Rest in eternal peace, Sydney. Your jersey may be retired, but your name will forever remind us of the Uganda we must fight to reclaim โ a Uganda free from this criminal misrule. #JusticeForSydneyGongodyo
